There comes a time to return home
The US is the country that I’ve called home for most of my life. My parents immigrated to the States in the late 1980s from Taiwan. So while all my documents and records show my birth place as the ROC, I have very few memories of the island. Now four decades later, our family has made the decision to leave and make the move back to Taiwan.
We started seriously embarking on this project at the end of 2025. While I knew I was born in Taiwan, I didn’t understand the implications of if that meant I still had citizenship with the ROC. After doing more research, I came to understand the term NWHR (National with Household Registration) which gives me the right to live in Taiwan. I was in fact a dual citizen. With that, I could be the bridge to get my family to be able to live in Taiwan as well.
There are a lot of Reddit threads and posts detailing the process for overseas nationals to become full citizens of the ROC. Namely these are NWOHR (National withOUT Household Registration). My child falls under this category, and most of the process is documented for adults with parents that are full ROC citizens. I figured I would go through the process to get my child his citizenship while he’s still a minor to save him the hassle in the future.
My husband is a US citizen that is also interested in moving abroad, so getting him the proper immigration documentation so that he can legally reside in Taiwan was part of our project as well.
